Statera’s Head of Underwriting, Matt Blumenstein, recently spoke at Vanderbilt Law School about litigation finance. Hosted by the Branstetter Litigation and Dispute Resolution Program and the Law and Business Society, Matt joined Professor Brian Fitzpatrick and Ernie Getto, Managing Director at Burford Capital, in a discussion on “What Every Law Student Needs to Know About Third Party Litigation Finance.” As commercial litigation finance has grown into a $15 billion industry in the United States, it has become increasingly important for law students to learn about this still relatively new aspect of the legal industry and what it means for law firms and clients.
Matt, a 2009 graduate of Vanderbilt School, drew upon his more than four years of experience leading underwriting at Statera, his ten years practicing at Williams & Connolly, and his clerkship on the D.C. Circuit to explain how funding works, how it fits into the larger civil justice system in the United States, and how it helps clients with meritorious cases access justice and pursue those cases to a successful resolution. Statera’s focus on commercial disputes that need $500,000 to $4 million in financing provides it a unique vantage on the U.S. legal industry, which is particularly relevant for law students as they consider post-law school career paths.
Matt and Statera’s Co-Founder and Managing Director, Chip Hodgkins, are Adjunct Professors at Vanderbilt Law School and periodically teach a class there on litigation finance.
